One of the worst feelings is when you feel your vehicle vibrating while you’re driving. Is it a flat tire, did a pothole damage my suspension, or did I break the driveshaft? There are many parts that may be the culprit as to why the car is shuddering, and the potential damage can fluctuate greatly. The most probable cause of the shaking generally happens in the vicinity of your tires and rims. The tires and rims connect the vehicle to the road, and if anything is out of alignment, will notice. It might be a broken transmission or a broken control arm. These major part failures may leave you stuck on the side of the road.
If you got different wheels and tires recently, your car shaking could be caused by the wheels and tires not being balanced correctly. Balancing the tires makes sure the weight of the tires and wheels are evenly distributed for the most peaceful ride possible. If you notice the tire shaking while you are driving, it could very well be an unbalanced tire. If you have confirmed that the new tires and wheels are balanced, but your car is still shaking, make sure the tires are inflated to the proper air pressure, and be sure to check if the lugnuts are fully tightened and make sure the tire pressure is correct. If your tires are the cause of the vibration, you should get it looked at immediately.
If your car shakes when braking, that is a pretty strong signal that you need to have your brakes checked out. The most likely reason for your steering wheel vibration is worn rotors. When you push down on the brake pedal, pieces of metal called brake pads compress against the brake rotors to create friction which will then bring your car to a stop. A smooth surface offers smooth braking. A warped surface will cause shudders when braking, sort of like how a brick road feels rougher than a highway.
